Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of that art can be an activist vehicle. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an intern at an unassuming studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
